Most people freeze up walking into a room of strangers because they're waiting for an obvious reason to talk to someone. A shared employer, a mutual friend, something safe.
But some of the best conversations start from something much smaller. A shared interest neither of you expected the other person to have.
I built a feature into NKTR around exactly this. Every user can set a hidden interest, something specific to them, not visible to anyone. When you're near someone else who shares it, the app quietly tells you there's a match. Not what the interest is, just that one exists. Something like, you and this person share a 47 percent match. Go find out why.
People light up over this. It turns a random stranger into a mystery worth solving. Suddenly there's a reason to walk up and start talking that has nothing to do with work titles or small talk.
Here's the tip, even without an app doing this for you. You don't need a big reason to start a conversation with someone. A tiny, specific shared interest is often more powerful than an obvious one, because it feels personal instead of transactional.
Next time you're in a room full of strangers, stop waiting for the safe opener. Ask about something oddly specific and see where it goes.
